Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems
This report was published in 2021 by The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT Rome.
The UN estimates that there are 476 million Indigenous Peoples worldwide, spread across 90 countries and over 5000 different community and linguistic groups.
From the Arctic to the Amazon and the Himalayas to the Sahel, many Indigenous Peoples having been facing climate change insecurity.
This report addresses, amongst other things, how industrialised global food systems are directly impacting upon indigenous food systems that have sustained ecological-based existence for centuries. It also highlights the issues of forced migration, commercialisation and monetisation of indigenous economies, as well as loss of traditional knowledge.
