Climate Crisis and the Role of Armed Forces

This publication by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence brings together global experts to analyse how climate change is one of the major long-term security risks of our time. The publication highlights how climate change will have drastic effects on people, nature, society, and the economy. Further, it demonstrates how large scale changes in environmental conditions are already affecting the living conditions of millions of people and acting as drivers of conflict and threat multipliers.

Of note is a chapter by CCIP’s Gen Richard Nugee, ‘Climate change: impact on and opportunities for armed forces’ from page 22. Gen Richard considers the major climate change challenges faced by the armed forces, presenting the opportunities for adaptation, cooperation, and building resilience in fragile regions.
